The tubers contain triterpenoid saponins like Curculigo saponin G and carbamic acids. The drug is androgenic,  increasing the size of seminal vescicles  and used in treatment of problems of urinogenital system. Study by  Chauhan and co-workers proved that Curculigo extract caused a significantly improved mating performance, penile erection, increased sperm count and enhanced attractability towards female. Anabolic and spermatogenic effects were evidenced by weight gains of reproductive organs.  It also restored the sexual dysfunction due to diabetes.
  2. Gokru    (Tribulus terrestris  Linn.) Though this plant is much valued in Ayurveda for treating urinary stones, it is considered as a potent aphrodisiac. It contains about 30 steroidal saponins such as tribulosin and protodioscin, lignamides and harmine. Protodioscin is found to improve sexual behavior parameters like enhancing libido and androgen receptor density in the brain. Gokhru  has proven anabolic effect as evidenced by weight gain in the body and reproductive organs. Improvement in sexual behavior of male rats like,  increased amount and intromission frequency and enhanced  Penile erection index (PEI), testosterone level and sperm count are found comparable to that of standard drug, sildenafil citrate (Viagra).
  3. Safed Musali    (Chlorophytum borivlianum S. & F.) This is highly valued as an aphrodisiac. In experiments safed Musli showed a marked aphrodisiac action, increased libido, sexual vigor, sperm count and sexual arousal. It helps in releasing testosterone and is known as herbal Viagra.
  4. Kavach   (Mucuna pruriens DC.) Kavach has a long history of traditional use in Brazil and India as an aphrodisiac. It also has the ability to increase testosterone. A U.S. patent filed claims that the high levels of L-dopa in Mucuna seed are converted to dopamine which inhibited of prolactin, the compound responsible for erection failure in males. It also improved erection, duration of coitus, post-coital satisfaction and increased sperm count in human males.

Ashwagandha  (Withania somnifera Dun.)  Ancient Kama Sutra describes this plant as an herb to be used for heightening sexual experience.  It is found to improve semen quality by regulating reproductive hormone levels and oxidative stress in seminal plasma of infertile males. 7. Talimkhana  (Hygrophila spinosa . T. Anders.) The seeds are found to exhibit pronounced anabolic effects like gains in the body and reproductive organ weights in treated animals. Increased spermatogenesis as well as fructose levels of seminal vesicles also were noted. In rats mounting frequency and enhanced attractability towards females were also increased.

Sexual problems of men

Modern man is plagued with a myriad of problems in his sexual life, mainly due to the stress from work, life style, junk food, chronic diseases etc. Erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, low sperm count, prematue ejaculation etc are some of the problems faced by many young and old today.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is when a man has trouble getting or keeping an erection. ED becomes more common as you get older. This may be due to Limited blood flow  to the penis due to cigarette smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, alcoholism, drug abuse, normal aging, and depression or due to certain commonly prescribed medications. It can also be due to psychologic causes like depression, performance anxiety, and lack of interest in sex.

Loss of libido, (Inhibited Sexual Desire) refers to a decrease in desire for, or interest in sexual activity. Reduced libido can result from physical or psychological factors. It has been associated with low levels of the hormone testosterone. It also may be caused by psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression; medical illnesses, such as diabetes and high blood pressure; certain medications, including some antidepressants; and relationship difficulties.

Low sperm count is the main cause of male infertility usually problems with sperm count and the quality of that sperm. Sperm-related problems include  low sperm count, slow moving sperm, malformed sperm, thick seminal fluid or absence of sperm. These problems result from too much or too little of some of the hormones that guide sperm making.

Ejaculation Disorders are of different types including:1) Premature ejaculation when ejaculation occurs before or soon after penetration, 2) Inhibited or retarded ejaculation (ejaculation occurs very slowly) or 3) Retrograde ejaculation when   the ejaculate is forced back into the bladder rather than through the urethra and out the end of the penis. In some cases, premature and inhibited ejaculation are caused by a lack of attraction for a partner, past traumatic events, and psychological factors, including a strict religious background that causes the person to view sex as sinful. Premature ejaculation, the most common form of sexual dysfunction in men, often is due to nervousness or diseases like diabetesheart and vascular (blood vessel) disease, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, chronic diseases such as kidney or liver failure, and alcoholism and drug abuse or certain drugs, including some antidepressants. Retrograde ejaculation is common in males with diabetes who suffer from diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage). This is due to problems with the nerves in the bladder and the bladder neck that allow the ejaculate to flow backward and into the bladder. In other men, retrograde ejaculation occurs after operations on the bladder neck or prostate, or after certain abdominal operations. In addition, certain medications, particularly those used to treat mood disorders, cause similar problems.
